Studies have shown that people who exercise on work days are more productive, happier and less stressed that those who don’t.
But if like me you can’t face exercise in the morning (or feel that you don’t have time) then what do you do?
I have found the secret!
Firstly, don’t think about exercising at all but start by doing some very light stretches for a few minutes. These should be very easy and take about 5 minutes. If you’re unsure what to do then use a few yoga moves. Make this your ‘standard’ routine and do it every morning. I end up by touching my toes, which at my age is a feat in itself!
You don’t need a lot of space, but if you can, do it in a room with a nice view and have the radio on or some music playing.
After a few days or even weeks, you will have a day when you have a bit more time and energy. At this point add a harder exercise; press up, sit ups, running on the spot, it’s up to you.
Let this become part of your routine and then add another and then another.
You’ll find that the additional exercises become part of the routine until you are up to about 15 or 20 minutes.
This is the important bit; when you wake up just have the basic routine in your mind, if you complete that, then you’ve won. But you will inevitably find that by the time you get to the end of the basic stretching routine the additional exercises won’t seem so daunting.
Some days you will wake up and you won’t feel like exercise at all or you’ll be in a rush. On those days just go back to your basic stretches and do no more. DON’T DO NOTHING!
This really works, soon you’ll be so productive you won’t recognize yourself and you’ll be smiling smugly at the yawners in the office – because you have the secret.
